 art auction

     Sunday, April 20, 2008

Artists have long appreciated the breathtaking rural landscapes of Adams County, so it is no surprise that the Land Conservancy and artists from all over the region have teamed up to preserve precious land and showcase superb artwork.  There is something for everyone.

Hosted by Holly and Allison Giles, owners of the Blue Parrot Bistro in Gettysburg, all types of art are offered for sale with proceeds benefiting the Conservancy.  Last year's Auction provided over $20,000 for the Conservancy, and nearly $115,000 has been raised since its initiation.

 jeb stuart's ride

(also known as "Stuart's Delay" - a reenactment of the Battle of Hanover)

    Thursday, July 3 , 2008

For the first time, we are launching forth into the daunting arena of the Civil War, working with the Greater Hanover Alliance and a bunch of Reenactors to bring to life Stuart's frantic ride across the Mason Dixon Line.

You know the name – Confederate General Jeb Stuart, late for a date in Gettysburg, took a wild ride from Union Mills, Maryland, through Hanover. As the story goes, he was late because he took the time to capture a wagon train in Rockville, Maryland.

Not content to allow the rebels to steal their bacon, Union forces pursued and nearly cut Stuart off from his troops. Blocked in by Union soldiers on one side and large hedges on the other, Stuart dared to jump the hedge, shouting to his second in command to encourage his troops to follow, “Rally Them, Blackford!”

Nationally known sculptor Francis Barnum has captured the hedge jump in this limited edition piece, titled, “Rally Them, Blackford.”

The Gettysburg Gift Center has generously donated the sculpture to the Land Conservancy, and raffle tickets for the piece are now available for sale at $5 each at the Land Conservancy office.

Drawing for the winner will take place during the reenactment of Stuart’s ride at the 145th Anniversary of the Battle of Hanover on July 3, 2008.

Road Rally. . 2007 was dynamite!

(If you weren't there, you missed a blast!)

This (9th) year's theme was 007 (of course):  All Things Bond.  James Bond

Winner of 2007's "Coolest Car" award (a crystal bowl from Coffman Jewelers) were Hank and Phyllis Whitfield with their 1983 Zimmer Golden Spirit.

Rally Master Bob McIlhenny and committee member Jim Chick present the coveted Fuzzy Dice and the Conservancy Cup (sponsored by the Adams County National Bank) to Grand Champions Bart and Judie Hogan, who were driving for sponsors Bill and Ann Ruppert of Windborne Farm Specialty Cut Flowers.  The Hogans also received an overnight stay at the Wyndham Hotel at Gateway Gettysburg and a gift basket from Thomason’s Herb Farm.  Both The Hogans and Rupperts were rookie Rally participants this year.

Every fall for the past nine years, over 200 travel lovers from the East Coast gather to participate in the Land Conservancy’s Road Rally.  Although not a race, Rally contestants vie for the Conservancy Cup, adorned with the coveted “fuzzy dice,” while they visit the hidden treasures of Adams County and traverse the unparalleled landscape.

Although Rally teams participate for the fun more than the prizes, other trophies are awarded for the highest-scoring team representing a club or organization, the dirtiest car (they get a car wash), the best costume, and others.

Click here for your team's 2008 entry form (theme:  "The Seven Wonders of Adams County: Natural, Ancient, Modern, and Otherwise . . !).  If you solicit a sponsor, you travel free.

  annual member dinner

       Thursday, March 12, 2009

Each year on the second Thursday in March, members of the Land Conservancy gather to celebrate yearly achievements, honor those who have preserved their properties during the year, and to elect new board members.

We would love to have you join us, member or not.  Next year's banquet may be held at the historic Gettysburg Hotel, located on the square in Gettysburg.

In 2007, we moved our Silent Auction to coincide with the dinner, and it has been a great match!  You'll have another opportunity next March, and we hope you'll jump at the chance to join us.  If you would like to donate an item or a unique service for the Silent Auction, please click HERE for an entry form.
